FAQ

What people ask most often about farming Australian redclaw crayfish and giant river prawns in a RAS.

Where do I start if I have never done this before?
Four steps: (1) send a request through the site; (2) get a consultation; (3) get a turnkey farm calculation for your building; (4) we start working together and build the farm.
How much do I need to start?
A minimum farm starts from 5,280 €. For a smaller start there are trial and training kits from 2,100 €.
Why are the crayfish blue?
This is the Australian redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus): its shell is naturally blue-green, and males have a red patch on the claw. It is not dye and it is not a disease — that is simply the species.
How much do the crayfish and the prawns cost?
Australian redclaw crayfish and giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) — from 100 €/kg. This is the price at which the product is sold to buyers.
How long do the crayfish take to grow?
The Australian redclaw reaches market weight in about 6 months.
How long do the giant river prawns take to grow?
About 4 months to market size.
How long until it pays for itself?
As a guide — up to 14 months. The exact period depends on the size of the farm and the selling price.
What does the contract include?
Calculation and design of the project for your building, turnkey; all the equipment; training; stocking with juveniles; ongoing support.
How much space do I need? What kind of building works?
You can start with almost any building: for small spaces there are training and trial kits, and a minimum farm starts from 5,280 €.
Do I need experience or a degree?
No. The technology and the training come together with the farm.
Where do I sell? Who buys it?
Demand is high — live crayfish and prawns sell as a delicacy.
What can go wrong?
The main risk is a power cut: without electricity the aeration stops and the water stays cold for a long time. Losses from cannibalism are already in the calculation: survival is 70–80 %.
Can I farm crayfish and prawns together?
Yes. We also design projects for combined farming — Australian redclaw crayfish and giant river prawns together.
How much time does it take every day? Can I keep my job?
Feeding and checking every day, sorting once a month. Up to 2 hours a day in total.
